What are Solar Micro Inverter?
Solar micro inverter are DC-AC inverter that convert
the direct current (DC) power output from individual solar photovoltaic (PV)
modules into alternating current (AC) power that can be used by the home or
inserted into the utility grid. Unlike traditional central or string inverter
that serve an entire solar array, micro inverter work at the individual panel
level, with one micro inverter installed on each PV module in the array.
Benefits of Module Level Power Electronics
By installing micro inverter directly below each solar module, module level
power electronics (MLPE) like micro inverter provide several key advantages
over traditional string and central inverter.
First, micro Solar
Micro Inverter maximize the energy harvest from each panel individually.
Unlike string inverter where shading or failure of a single panel reduces the
output of an entire string, micro inverter ensure optimal performance from
every module regardless of orientation, age or presence of shading. This
results in up to 25% more annual energy production compared to string inverter.
Second, micro inverter enable module level monitoring to detect underperforming
panels early. System installers can pinpoint exactly which module needs
attention for cleaning, repair or replacement. This makes system maintenance
and troubleshooting much easier.
Third, micro inverter mitigate risk. If a single micro inverter fails, it only
impacts the production from one module, not the entire array. The remainder of
the system continues to operate normally. This allows for increased system
uptime and reliability.
Fourth, by distributing the inverter function over many units instead of a few
centralized inverter, the overall system complexity is reduced. There are fewer
single points of failure and no long cable runs between the panels and a
central inverter location that can influence performance and create failure
modes.
Fifth, micro inverter are well-suited for an evolving solar landscape with
various module types, technologies, orientation and mounting configurations. By
allowing dynamic control of each panel individually, micro inverter easily
accommodate different types of modules installed in diverse conditions.
Micro Inverter Technology Improvements
Early micro inverter were larger in size and had lower efficiencies than
central inverter. However, continuous technology improvements have addressed
these limitations.
Today's micro inverter are much smaller, typically wall-plug sized, to minimize
their footprint below each solar module. Efficiencies have increased
significantly to 97-98%, at or exceeding levels of many central inverter which
are typically 94-96% efficient.
On the reliability front, meantime between failure (MTBF) rates for leading
micro inverter brands now meet or surpass 20 years. The units are fully
encapsulated and pass rigorous tests to withstand heat, humidity, dust and
other environmental stresses for decades of trouble-free operation.
Newer micros also provide advanced monitoring capabilities through integrated
power line communication (PLC). By transmitting performance data over the same
cable as AC power, micro inverter simplify system wiring while enabling
real-time monitoring of individual modules through online portal access or
mobile apps.
Thanks to scaled up manufacturing and mass deployment, costs for micro inverter
have declined rapidly. Installed prices for MLPE systems using micros are now
competitive with traditional central and string inverter systems on a total
cost of ownership basis over the long run.
Growth in the Micro Inverter
Driven by technology improvements and heightened focus on efficiency, uptime
and ease of installation/maintenance, the micro inverter has witnessed
tremendous growth over the last decade.
According to recent reports, annual micro inverter shipments grew from 1.4
million units in 2015 to over 8 million units in 2020. Major solar installation
like the US, Europe and Australia have shifted decisively in favor of micro inverter
with adoption rates reaching 60-90% in residential solar.
By constantly enhancing reliability and performance while driving costs lower
through economies of scale, micro inverter companies like Enphase Energy,
SolarEdge and Tigo Energy now enjoy global leadership. Industry analysts
project shipments to accelerate further and surpass 15 million units annually
by 2025.
As solar adoption proliferates to reach 3 billion people worldwide by 2030 as
per International Energy Agency estimates, micro inverter will remain integral to
maximize solar gains and derive maximum value from every watt of PV deployment.
With default monitoring and optimal yield assured for each panel, micros pave
the way for truly decentralized, democratized and distributed solar in the
coming decade.
